AERA (Asahi Shimbun Publications)August 4, 2025 issue (on sale July 28, 2025)

An article featuring an interview with Taiga Sato, the head of our office, on moving abroad appeared in the issue's lead feature.

AERA DIGITAL (Asahi Shimbun Publications)Published July 14, 2025

"Is life more fulfilling abroad than in Japan? A record 580,000 Japanese permanent residents overseas, motivated by tax savings and children's education; 20% of the wealthy 'considering it for the future'"

PROBLEM

Are you facing any of these questions about moving abroad or a dual life?

CASE 1

I want an option to protect my assets outside Japan as well, in preparation for a weak yen and inflation.

CASE 2

Rather than moving abroad completely, I am considering a two-base life that keeps a base in Japan.

CASE 3

With my family's future, education, inheritance and business succession in mind, I want more options abroad.

CASE 4

I want a neutral comparison of the differences between citizenship, permanent residence and visa programs.

CASE 5

I don't understand the differences in investment amounts, stay requirements, family inclusion, processing times and so on.

CASE 6

I am worried about paying high fees to overseas agents.

CASE 7

I want help with correspondence in English, coordination with local professionals and document preparation, in a language I am comfortable with.

CASE 8

I want a realistic overview of safety, healthcare, living infrastructure, taxation and how nationality is treated. (Within the limits of the Certified Public Tax Accountant Act.)

RISK

Preparing a base abroad means thinking about asset protection and peace of mind in daily life at the same time

In our office's own survey, about half of high-net-worth respondents said they find a dual life, with bases both in Japan and abroad, attractive. At the same time, programs, safety, healthcare, taxation and living infrastructure differ from country to country. It is important to compare early and gather the information you need to make a sound decision.

!
How to prepare for inflation, taxes on wealth, inheritance and business succession depends on each family's circumstances.
!
When choosing a base abroad, you need to compare not only the application requirements but also safety, healthcare, living infrastructure, language and housing.
!
Citizenship, permanent residence and visa programs can change. Costs and requirements need to be checked against the latest information.

DUAL LIFE

Not just a full move abroad: we also advise on a dual life that keeps your base in Japan

Moving abroad does not have to mean suddenly shifting your entire life overseas. Many people prepare for an uncertain future by keeping their home or business base in Japan while also creating options abroad for their lifestyle, assets and family.

Our office looks across permanent residence, visa and citizenship programs and compares those that fit your goals. Where specialist checks are needed, such as on taxation or how nationality is treated, we organize the key issues as we go. (Within the limits of the Certified Public Tax Accountant Act and other applicable laws.)

MESSAGE

A Message from Our Representative

Nice to meet you. I am Taiga Sato, Certified Administrative Scrivener (Specified).

Moving abroad, and applying for permanent residence, a visa or citizenship, is not something to choose based on a program's name alone. It is important to make a realistic comparison that takes into account your family composition, asset situation, business succession, asset succession, future place of residence, taxation and how your nationality will be treated.

Our office has supported many clients, mainly high-net-worth owners of small and medium-sized companies and investors, with applications that give them a secure option abroad.

Rather than pushing any one country, we organize the requirements, costs, timelines and maintenance conditions for each candidate country, and carry out the procedures for you, working with local professionals where necessary. We can assist in English and Japanese.

We also welcome consultations not only about moving abroad completely, but also about a dual life in which you keep your base in Japan while establishing a base abroad. No fees will ever be incurred without your prior consent. Please feel free to contact us!
